Lombrico & Gatto of Venice

The story and the evolution of Gerotto's mini excavators

Since 2002 Gerotto Federico Srl produces and works with mini excavators. Among the most popular and sought-after models, there are always the Gatto and the Lombrico, that stand out for their versatility in many different uses.

Most of their success is due to their usage in the Leonardo Project, the cleaning and restoration works of the underground canals ("Rii Terà") in the historical centre of Venice. These canals, obstructed by mud and debris, were cleaned using the miniexcavators, thus limiting the occupied space, the nuisance and the pollution of a traditional worksite.

Since that moment the potentialities of miniexcavators were clear:
- reduction of manual labour
- reduction of working time
- possibility of working in confined spaces, no man entry
- minimal environmental impact
- preservation of architecture

In the following 13 years, Lombrico and Gatto were used for ducts and sewers cleaning, debris removal, aspiration of waste material from agriculture and industries, and in many other applications. Moreover, many variations were created for different purposes, equipped with buckets, suction noses, cutting heads and hoses of different sizes.

Both robots have also been produced in their Atex version, suitable for working in potentially explosive areas. Thanks to the Atex certification, it was possible to extend their application fields to the cleaning of storage tanks in refineries, of steel plants, of harbour areas and silos.

In 2015, Lombrico and Gatto have been renovated in their structure and, to remember their first works in Venice, Gerotto decided to entitle them "Lombrico of Venice" and "Gatto of Venice".

The Lombrico of Venice now has a fully stainless steel structure, thus increasing its resistance to wear (chemical agent, rust). Also, it's now possible to install a wider range of tools (suction noses, cutting heads, high pressure nozzles).

The Gatto of Venice has a stainless steel structure too, and was designed in a modular way to pass through a manhole with a diameter of 600 mm.
