S.A.O. – Servizi Ambientali Oltrepò used E-Dozer, Gerotto’s wireless electric robot, for a complex sewer cleaning project in Northern Italy.
The project involved a brick-lined sewer tunnel approximately 70 metres long, 80 centimetres high and just over one metre wide. Around 70 m³ of sewage, sediment, stones and solid debris had accumulated inside.
The tunnel’s restricted dimensions and the presence of large debris limited the effectiveness of conventional jetting and vacuum systems.
The challenge was to collect and transport the debris along the entire tunnel without requiring operators to enter the confined space.
E-Dozer: a wireless electric robot for confined spaces
S.A.O. selected E-Dozer, Gerotto’s compact, battery-powered robot operated remotely by radio control.
Approximately 50 centimetres high and capable of operating in up to 30 centimetres of water, E-Dozer is equipped with a front bucket and lights and can be fitted with integrated cameras.
The bucket collected sediment, stones and debris and transported them to the vacuum point. With no power cables restricting its movement, the robot could operate freely inside the tunnel, while its wireless controls allowed the operator to manage the entire operation from outside.
Results of the robotic sewer tunnel cleaning project
The use of E-Dozer made it possible to:

clean 70 metres of sewer tunnel;

remove approximately 70 m³ of material;

eliminate the need for operator entry;

complete the project faster than initially estimated;

work throughout the day thanks to the battery capacity;

eliminate exhaust emissions from the robot.
“E-Dozer impressed us from the very beginning. The operator can work safely without entering the tunnel, while the bucket provides good material-handling performance and the batteries allow us to work throughout the day,” explains Massimo Picasso, CEO of S.A.O. – Servizi Ambientali Oltrepò.
This project demonstrates how a wireless electric robot can make cleaning and material-removal operations safer and more efficient inside sewers, tunnels and other confined spaces.
