GRP Plasticorr chooses Gerotto Robotics technology for underground fuel tank cleaning

GRP Plasticorr Kft., one of Hungary’s leading environmental service companies, has selected Gerotto Robotics technology to perform the cleaning of underground fuel storage tanks at petrol stations throughout the country.

Founded in 1991, GRP Plasticorr has built a strong reputation in environmental services, continuously investing in innovative technologies that improve safety, operational efficiency and environmental performance. By introducing the Gerotto Lombrico FTC robot into its operations, the company has replaced manual confined-space cleaning with a no-man-entry robotic solution specifically designed for underground fuel tanks.

Commenting on the collaboration, Kajtár Máté, CEO of GRP Plasticorr Kft., said:

“We work in a very narrow industry, where, based on my experience, it is difficult to find partners with whom we do not immediately become competitors, but with whom we can work together on future projects. With Gerotto, however, we immediately had a good fit and to this day we are able to work together in a way that is future-proof and pays off for both parties in the long term. Our goal is common, which is to make this dangerous industry as safe as possible while continuing to deliver quality work. If we use automation and digitalization for good in this way, then I am proud to lead GRP in this direction in the future and I believe that this is the right strategy.”

Lombrico X FTC Ex-0 : designed for underground fuel tanks

GRP Plasticorr uses the Gerotto Lombrico X FTC Ex-0, an ATEX and IECEx Zone 0 certified robot engineered to clean underground tanks through manholes as small as 400 mm (16″). Compact, lightweight and remotely operated, the robot is specifically designed for cleaning operations in confined spaces where manual intervention traditionally exposes operators to significant risks.

Equipped with a robotic arm with three rotating nozzles, a front high-pressure water nozzle bar, and a suction hose connected to an external vacuum unit, the Lombrico X FTC Ex-0 can operate with adjustable flow rates from 8 to 60 l/min and pressures from 5 to 200 bar, delivering effective sludge removal while keeping operators safely outside the tank.

Faster cleaning, higher safety

Before adopting robotic technology, underground tank cleaning required personnel to enter confined spaces equipped with breathing apparatus, continuous gas monitoring systems and extensive ventilation procedures.

Today, the robotic process has significantly simplified operations while improving both safety and productivity.

The project has delivered measurable results:

  • Cleaning time reduced by 33%, from 1.5 hours to 1 hour per tank.
  • Approximately 300 litres of residues recovered from each tank.
  • Operations completed with only three operators.
  • Zero human entry into hazardous confined spaces.
  • Reduced exposure to hazardous substances and lower environmental impact through residue recovery.

By combining robotics with established environmental expertise, GRP Plasticorr demonstrates how no-man-entry technologies can improve safety, operational efficiency and sustainability.
